However, its blockchain functionality is relatively basic by modern standards.Unlike Bitcoin, Ethereum was built from the ground up to support more advanced use cases by utilizing the technology of smart contracts, giving rise to an entire industry dubbed “decentralized finance.”Ethereum and products derived from it offer their users such advanced financial instruments as lending and insurance, which do not rely on trusted intermediaries.By “wrapping” BTC in the ERC-20 standard, WBTC enables full integration of a Bitcoin-like asset into this advanced environment of financial decentralized applications, bringing along the immense liquidity associated with the BTC market.In addition, Wrapped Bitcoin makes the job significantly easier for exchanges, wallets and payment services that work with Ethereum: instead of having to run two separate nodes for ETH and BTC networks, they can support WBTC operations with just an Ethereum node.Finally, Ethereum blockchain’s faster average blocktime — about 15 seconds vs 10 minutes respectively — increases the speed with which WBTC can be transacted, compared to actual bitcoins.How Many Wrapped Bitcoin [WBTC] Coins Are There in Circulation?There is no predetermined schedule of WBTC issuance. Instead, WBTC is automatically minted or burned whenever users purchase or sell their tokens for Bitcoin via a system of merchants and custodians.Because Wrapped Bitcoin is always backed by Bitcoin at a 1:1 ratio, the number of tokens in circulation is directly dependent on the amount of Bitcoin reserves in the WBTC network. As of October 2020, that number was just over 94,000 tokens, worth approximately $1 billion in total.How Is the Wrapped Bitcoin Network Secured?WBTC tokens are secured by the parent blockchain they run on — Ethereum. In turn, ETH is protected by the Ethash proof-of-work function, a representative of the Keccak family of hash functions.Where Can You Buy Wrapped Bitcoin [WBTC]?You can buy WBTC on several exchanges, both centralized and decentralized ones, which serve as merchants on the Wrapped Bitcoin network. According to Arcane Research, while Bitcoin balance on crypto exchanges has fallen by roughly 1.2%, Bitcoin held in corporate treasuries, exchange-traded investment vehicles and on Ethereum has risen by 0.51%, 0.69% and 0.98% respectively. There is currently $10.9B worth of WBTC on the Ethereum network, as of February 2022. Since Bitcoin’s creation over a decade ago, the technology behind the revolutionary “peer-to-peer electronic cash system” has largely remained the same. But Bitcoin isn't the be-all and end-all of cryptocurrency. On smart contract blockchains such as Ethereum, developers have created a thriving decentralized finance (DeFi) ecosystem.In order to use Bitcoin within Ethereum's DeFi ecosystem, it's necessary to create an ERC-20 token that represents it. This is Wrapped Bitcoin (WBTC), which aims to combine the best of both worlds by bringing the value and liquidity (money) of Bitcoin to the dynamic and rapidly evolving world of DeFi.ADADWhat is WBTC?WBTC stands for Wrapped Bitcoin, simply an ERC-20 token that represents Bitcoin—one WBTC equals one BTC. A BTC can be converted into a WBTC and vice-versa. Being an ERC-20 token makes the transfer of WBTC faster than normal Bitcoin, but the key advantage of WBTC is its integration into the world of Ethereum wallets, decentralized apps (dapps), and smart contracts. At time of publication, there are over 280,000 WBTC in circulation. Who Invented WBTC?Wrapped Bitcoin launched on the Ethereum mainnet in January 2019. Wrapped Bitcoin was brought to the world as a collaborative project between major players in the DeFi ecosystem, such as BitGo, Ren, Dharma, Kyber, Compound, MakerDAO, and Set Protocol, in an effort to bring more liquidity into the Ethereum network by dipping into Bitcoin. The project is now controlled by a Decentralized Autonomous Organization (DAO) called the WBTC DAO.What’s makes it special?Many of the most popular DeFi dapps on Ethereum require the use of collateral. Products such as MakerDAO and Compound require users to lock up crypto assets in order to borrow other crypto assets.Because the overall value of Ethereum is significantly smaller than Bitcoin, this limits how much these protocols can grow. By bringing Bitcoin over, protocols get a boost in liquidity and thus can create more sources of collateral for their dapps. Wrapped Bitcoin also allows Bitcoin holders to hold it as an asset while also using DeFi dapps like Compound to borrow or lend money.What else is different?Since there is still a gap between Bitcoin and Ethereum—the chains can’t natively talk to each other—trust among people is required. Compared to BTC, Wrapped BTC will never have the same level of security or trustlessness as the original, because it relies on people and organizations to manage the system instead of pure code. ADADTo increase trust and transparency, WBTC undergoes regular audits and publishes all on-chain transactions and verifications for the Bitcoin and Ethereum networks. Users can independently verify how much BTC was sent to the WBTC address on the Bitcoin blockchain then check if those transactions are matched with the creation of WBTC tokens on the Ethereum blockchain. The reverse process of burning of WBTC to redeem BTC can also be tracked on-chain.How are WBTC tokens produced? Governing members of the WBTC DAO decide on major upgrades and changes to the protocol as well as who can assume the roles of the merchants and custodians who manage the system.Users who have BTC and want to convert it into WBTC must interact with merchants. Merchants initiate the process of minting or burning WBTC tokens by performing verification procedures to confirm users’ identity. Custodians hold the actual BTC being wrapped and do the actual minting and burning of tokens on the Ethereum blockchain. When WBTC is burned, BTC is returned to the user from the custodian. When new WBTC is minted, BTC is taken from the user and stored by the custodian.How do you get hold of WBTC tokens?Since WBTC is an ERC-20 token, it can be traded on decentralized exchanges (DEXs) such as Kyber or Uniswap. If you want to swap BTC for WBTC, there are a number of platforms available, including Atomic Wallet, Coinlist, and Poloniex.What can you do with WBTC?WBTC can be used in DeFi for lending, borrowing, token-swapping, yield farming and in liquidity pools. Some DeFi platforms that support WBTC include Aave, Balancer, Compound, Kyber Network, MakerDAO and Uniswap.The futureThe future is less about how individuals use WBTC and more about what developers build using it. As a permissionless ERC-20 token, WBTC becomes another building block for DeFi applications in the growing ecosystem of "money Lego."
